monster high - freak du chiq Gooliope Jellington

Gooliope, wow. I knew she was a big doll, I had a good idea of how tall she'd be but nothing quite prepared me for how BIG her head would be. It's pretty impressive and beautifully striking.

Gooliope comes in a box that's a bit bigger than the regular size, but even so she's still hunched over to fit. I love the cracks in the plastic as if she's been banging on it for release lol.
Though mine's hands are positioned a bit wrong for the illusion to really work, it's a fun concept and makes for fun packaging.

The side of the box has her portrait.

The back of her box again has her art and a brief little bio. She's clearly supposed to be a blob girl but she's daughter of "unknown" anyway. I like to think of her as "daughter of the B Movies" considering her 50 foot woman look, the radiation symbols etc.

Husband pointed this out just before I started deboxing her. Wowza giant panty shot. It's made worse by the crowd positioning, looks like they're pointing "omg giant underpants!" hahahah.
Poor girl, her pose looks great from the front but from the side of the box it's a bit um... inappropriate. Ahem. Thank goodness for moulded panties huh?

Gooliope's box front was surprisingly easy to get off. It's plastic, but the tabs are softer than the Haunted boxes and the whole thing unhooked on each side quite nicely. Phew.

However, the doll herself is pretty solidly tied into the packaging. Her hands are shackled with plastic cuffs on her wrists AND her forarm (two shackles? really?). Oh one arm these just slid off once I popped her hand off but on the other hand, due to the position of her arm it was a bit more fiddly.
Her head is tagged in place with three tabs, she has ankle shackles that mean you have to remove her shoes and carefully slide her legs up and out and then she has not one but TWO waist restraints overlapping one another which made them tricky to cut.

I finally got her out without injuring myself or the doll though.

The backing card shows a big top and some buildings around. There's a big full moon, seems there's always a full moon in the MH universe, heheh.

Her stand is stored in this little compartment to one side, but it's also taped into the compartment so you can't just slide it out like you'd think, nope, you still have to unhinge the whole backing card to unstick the tape. *sigh* I suspect this was designed to allow you to just slip it out but then someone decided people would just nick the stands so they taped them in as well.

This stand is MASSIVE. It's identical to the regular black MH stands, but it's twice the size. Wowza.

And here's Gooliope out of her box. She's a lot happier to be free and able to stretch.

She has box hair, really really bad box hair. The front section is gelled hard while the rest is in loose, flattened curls.

Her eyes are big and blue with ornate lashes and dots around them. She has radiation symbols in each pupil.

She has a gold headband with a calliope on it, which is an instrument often used at fairs and circuses. Also it's a nod to her name, cute if not rather um... obscure touch.

I'm not sure if she and the blob cam share at least partially the same face. Certainly they both have a pudgy flattened nose and a squared chin but Gooliope has totally different ears and her lips look different but that could just be paint. It might be a modified and enlarged version, I really can't tell.
Perhaps they're sisters. heheh.

Her dress has what look to me like infinity symbols on the bodice and she wears a ringmaster shoulder piece with fancy epaulettes and 816 (or "big" if viewed in a mirror)

Her dress has a circus theme with some sort of big top pattern in the skirt with skulettes, tape measures (I think) and radiation symbols lol. It has a tattered hem and a net underskirt with a wobbly stripe pattern. The pattern/fabric of the underskirt is VERY familiar but I can't for the life of me work it out. I thought it was maybe Honey Swamp but nope, either way.. it's a fabric i'm sure they've used previously.

Gooliope is MASSIVE, she's twice the height of a regular Monster High doll and her shoes add extra height.

She absolutely dwarfs the rest of the Monster High dolls, even crouching. It's crazy how huge she is. I LOVE it.

Her feet are huge, even bigger than Marisol's big clompy feet. She fitted into some Teen Trends shoes (though they were flat so her heeled foot rather messes the fit up) and Lorifina could fit mostly into her shoes. They were perhaps a little too high even with Lorifina's articulated toes.

And speaking of shoes, here they are. They're like boats for the other MH dolls. They're a dark fushia pink sort of colour that my camera for some reason photographs as red (go figure). They have a black skullette on the front with a large box and scalloped shaped edges. The platform at the front is more skulettes and swirls while the heel is a skeletal carousel horse. It has been painted with white and grey to give it a distressed sort of look though I honestly feel it looks more like it was just badly painted. Maybe a dark wash to pick out the detail might fix that.

The details though... omg. Gooliope's earrings are large wheels with ornate swirl details. I'm not sure what they are, something fairgroundy most likely but I couldn't tell you.
Her ears are big, rounded and have drippy bits.

Her whole body has drippy bits!

Not only does she have all this sculpted drippy detail, she also has a whole new body with more articulation than any MH doll we've seen before.
Her arms are in four pieces with shoulder, upper arm, a double jointed elbow and then hinged wrist. She also has a joint under her bust that allows her to slouch forward.

Her legs are jointed at the hips, the upper leg and then she has a double jointed knee.
This knee joint means she can actually kneel down and that's ridiculously exciting to me lol.

The drippiness continues down her back and the backs of her legs.

Her new elbows and knees mean she can cross her arms, touch her face and kneel properly on her knees.

She can also kinda cross her legs (not quite due to the length and rigidity of the lower leg heh, but close enough)
She can also look up and down pretty nicely (she looks up better than down sadly)

Her new body means she can pull some pretty fun poses, I got a bit distracted playing with her... hehe.

She can also crouch down to look her class mates in the eye, which is useful.

Sadly her hair is rather frizzy. Running a wide toothed brush through her hair resulted in this fluffy look.

This girl could benefit from a proper curling session.

Her hair is a lovely shade of canary yellow and deep pink.

For the time being i've just tied it back, it looks ok.
When i've got time/motivation I will try to curl it.

I have no idea what these numbers in her hair line mean. CHW50, dunno.
Though i'm relieved that despite reports of her hair being not hugely thickly rooted mine seems to have sufficient hair. For the size of her head, this spacing seems about right to my eye and there's no obvious bald patches, so yay!

Calliope is VERY pink, she actually washes out all the other pink skinned girls. She's a vivid bubblegum pink that's almost... glowing (appropriate for a radioactive blob huh?)

I got together my other "large" dolls for scale. Gooliope is really about the same height as City Girl Houston, but her heels and the size of her head make her a closer to Lorifina. She and Lorifina have similarly sized feet but Gooliope is skinnier than even the Moxie Teen, so no way can any of these girls share outfits.
Gooliope has a similarly sized head to Lorifina as well, it may even be a bit bigger.

I wasn't sure I could fit Gooliope on my doll shelf either, but after some umming and ahhing I managed to get her to kneel down amongst the others. She stands out, not only because of her size but because she's SO vividly pink, like omg she's pink overload! I... kinda love it. I mean, if you're gonna go pink, you may as well go OTT and there's no other colour a blob girl could be! Had she not been pink i'd have been upset, so this is one time where pink skin doesn't just make sense, it's a vital component.

In the UK Gooliope is currently retailing for £35, which is a bit painful. I got mine for a much more acceptable £27 on sale. I'd say she's probably worth £30, as she is HUGE and her articulation is pretty great. (Her hands come off btw, but her elbows don't detatch)
Her outfit is basic but it works well for her, she can fit into some Barbie stuff but it's sinfully short.

Overall, i'm pleased I got her. She's even more impressive in person than in photos. Photos just don't do her size or articulation justice.
Her hair is frizzy and needs taming, but otherwise she's lovely.
I'm delighted with her and give her a solid 9 sticky hand prints out of 10.

And no, I shall not be getting the big frankie/clawdeen etc because this girl is special, any other giant characters would take away from her specialness.
I love my giant blob girl, she's brilliant.

  1. Hi! I just came across this blog, and I love it! I just wanted to let you know that Gooliope's arms do detach higher up than her wrists, but it happens at the joint on her upper arm rather than at the elbow. Thought you might like to know!

Also, I had assumed that her earrings were some kind of wagon wheel, like you might have on a circus wagon or, actually, a calliope.
