Monster High is BACK baby! - Draculaura

Aww hell yeah, they're back! And this time effort was put in.

Unlike the reboot which was honestly super phoned in, this "threeboot" or "g3" as people are calling it comes with a whole new animated series, a live action movie and a LOT of new dolls. Like seriously Mattel is pushing out so much at once to compete with MGA's "flood the market and overload the shelves" approach that it's sort of overwhelming.

Of course, the UK still has no sign of these new dolls while the US has people excitedly heading off for doll hunts and I can't say i'm not super envious. I miss doll hunts.

BUT Amazon ships to the UK. It's bloody expensive, but it's an option so I ordered in a few of the first wave of the Threeboot while I wait for the UK to even tell us IF we're getting the damn dolls any time in the next fucking 6 months. -_-

I want to do these thoroughly, or as thoroughly as I can, so first up is Draculaura with Frankie and Cleo to follow in their own reviews.

Strap in. This could be a long un.

First impressions, the box is pretty boring. Pretty doll though.

It's a standard plastic fronted box with a card back and those sharp pointy plastic tabs that you risk cutting yourself on as you pry them out of the card. I HATE this style of box.

I miss the old trapper keeper style boxes, even though they were very hard to open without tearing the cardboard tabs, at least the tabs didn't demand blood you know?

The back of the box is unimpressive. It's a wierd composite image that's quite poorly put together with an illustration of Draculaura that looks nothing like her doll OR her animated counterpart.

Can you see what I mean about poorly put together composite? The characters were clearly drawn sitting on SOMETHING but it sure as hell wasn't these stairs they've been poorly slapped on top of. Notice how Cleo appears to be hovering, Lagoona isn't even resting ON anything and Frankie is leaning against an invisible pillow/chair arm or something.

It's a bloody bizarre image. It's also i'm gonna be frank here, just not very polished looking. It's coloured to look almost like coloured pencils which gives is a "fanart" sort of look to it that doesn't look in keeping with a professional factory box. Nothing against fanart, but I sort of expect a level of polish and professional looking artwork on an official product you know?

it reminds me a lot of the artwork for the 2016 Bratz reboot which had a really amateur look and was quite offputting.

this art isn't as ugly as that, but it still doesn't quite look... finished.

The fact the characters don't blend at all with the background they've been hastily slapped onto makes it all feel kinda rushed and incomplete, like a mockup rather than a completed finished thing. Also Cleo is wearing a completely different outfit to her actual release which adds to the jarring feeling that this is a mockup not a finished piece.

I dunno, it's a very odd image and the more I look at it the more it bugs me.

Drac's image is done in the same style, presumably by the same artist and while it's cute enough (what's up with the sticky out pinkie drac? it's a smoothie not tea or something lol) it looks nothing like the actual doll which is again, really jarring. Her outfit isn't even correct, she's wearing a dress in this image with an undershirt and solid knit socks with lace up wedge shoes.

this is NOT what her doll is wearing. I wonder if like Cleo, this was an intial design concept that got tweaked and changed somewhere along the way and Mattel were in too much of a hurry to fix the art to match.

but again, it makes it all feel a bit disjointed.

Sadly the dolls no longer have diaries (I loved the diaries) or proper bios. There's only three sections to Draculaura's biography here: Monster type, Accessories and pet.

No hint of a personality or character. I suppose they figure kids will watch the shows but I still think it's a pity. I liked the original bios, this just feels quite shallow and superficial like any other doll line. MH's big thing was that it wasn't really a fashion doll line, it had more in common with action figures in that the characters had well... character, and they weren't really designed to be dressed in one another's outfits. It made the line quite unique and I remember fondly the excitement of a new diary to read with more lore to discover lol.

But it's just a box.

While the plastic of the new boxes means no more character specific colouration of the box itself, we DO have character specific illustrations on one side of the box which is cute. Draculaura's look to be mostly depictions of her accessories including her ICoffin, her backpack, her shoes and her pet. There's also a few winged hearts, some fans, a spiderweb heart and a hand with sparkles which I assume is a nod to the new "Draculaura is a vampire but ALSO a witch" wierd lore thing they added.

I'm not totally sure WHY a vampire also needs to be a witch and they couldn't just give her you know... funky vampire magic but whatever. Maybe she read too much Vampire the Masquerade and decided the Tremere sounded cool.

The box wasn't TOO bad to open, though I nearly cut myself on the stupid plastic tabs. -_- It didn't quite draw blood but it tried.

Goddamnit.

I wonder how they decided on the characters on the front of the box. Draculaura's has Clawdeen and Lagoona which I found unusual given typically Frankie would have been the third member of the group, not Lagoona. Certainly it looks like they've kept that dynamic in the movie but who knows. Maybe they pulled names out of a hat. *shrug*

Draculaura is tabbed into her box and held in position with a plastic molded piece which makes getting some of the plastic ties cut a little awkward. Her hair has two or three bloody plastic ties across it AND she has 3 or 4 plastic staples in her head for added "fuck you" from mattel. -_-

I HAAAATE plastic head staples. HATE THEM SO MUCH.

thankfully I didn't accidentally snip any hair OR stab my finger on the stupid things. I ended up wrenching the poor doll out of the box which tore most of the staples barring one which I then had to snip. But the plastic shell that holds her head in position made it very difficult to get to the staples in the first place, hence my wrenching.

Her I Coffin is ALSO tied to her hand not with elastic like I expected but with two plastic ties instead. WHY?

And yet, all her little foods and accessories are NOT tied in at all, they're simply slotted into these little plastic indents that hold them in place nice and securely.

So why did her head need to be stapled to the box and why did her Icoffin need to be stapled in as well?

I also really question the decision to do all these random accessories. I mean I get that accessories are fun and all but i'm not convinced that food and drink is really that... exciting? I think i'd have preferred the money went into the clothing or something. But we'll see if I change my mind once I get them all out.

poor Count Fabulous. He looks like a fucking cat. Seriously, did the artist never see a bat before? It looks like they sculpted a kitten then got told "oh no, he's a bat" so hastily removed the front legs and added wings.

His printing is grainy and ill defined, thought his paintwork is mostly okay. I'll get a better look at him once he's out of the box. He's ALSO plastic tabbed in.

All the new dolls also come with an extra jacket piece. In Draculaura's case it's a cape and I was surprised to find it was hung on and stapled to a carboard hanger. But I have a question Mattel.

Why is this hanger cardboard....

But the Monster High logo of the box itself is a separate plastic piece???

Like... I really really want to know the thought process behind this.

The hanger, if plastic, could have actually been a vuagely usable piece. But the logo? WHY IS IT PLASTIC!?? It could have easily been card, it's INSIDE the box under the plastic outer anyway and all it is is decoration so... wtf?

Also, another question Mattel. Why does the box have two large voids on either side of it when both are empty?

The box is seriously a good 1/3 bigger than it actually needs to be and most of that is these two large triangular voids on either side of the box that don't seem to serve any purpose other than making the box a funky wierd shape. It's not like the accessories are attached at an angle or anything. It's a very strange decision.

I initially assumed there might be a stand or maybe like a little copyright slip of paper or something in there like there often is in doll boxes but nope, empty. Pointless empty space designed purely to make the box larger and thus take up more shelf space.

I suppose I get it, with MGA flooding shelves with excessive amounts of product Mattel has to compete by doing the same, and given how fucking HUGE Rainbow High boxes are, you gotta pad out your box to muscle for space right?

How depressing that is, that it's become a fight for who can take up the most space rather than any actual real merit.

Anyway, let's get this girl outta this plastic prison.

She's a solid little doll. Lightweight like most modern dolls but she feels robust and well put together. She lacks the fragility of the original Monster High dolls or the shitty gappy joints of the reboot dolls.

Her joints are good and feel pretty strong, her hands pop on and off with a tug but never feel like they'll snap when you try to get them back on nor do they hurt your fingers in the process (the g1 dolls have a real problem with hurting my fingers when I try to get their damn hands back on)

Her hair is a greasy mess though.

Like ew... what the fuck Mattel? It's full of some sort of product that's left it greasy and lank straight out of the box. Thankfully a good comb helps that but it's also really badly cut with a lot of uneven bits. I'll have to trim it to neaten it up.

Her hair is also not overly thickly rooted, especially at the back. It's fine in that there's no bald patches if you leave it in the factory style, but it seems the pink side is thinner than the black which is a bit wierd.

Even after a good comb her hair still feels slightly greasy and it's heavy so i'm assuming it's saran. It has that "slick" feeling saran usually has. This is good news because saran withstands play better than most and doesn't tend to frizz like nylon or rot like poly. Yeah that's right people, poly ROTS, as in, it crumbles and disintegrates after only about 10 years. Big yikes. (rumour has it that Clawdeen uses poly and this is disgusting because Mattel KNOW it rots, they are well aware of this but they clearly don't give a shit)

thankfully Drac has decent hair, albeit somewhat thin hair.

I don't actually own that many of the original first wave dolls anymore. I sold them a long time ago to "upgrade" to dolls I liked better. My original Draculaura suffered the same problem most of the original dolls had, she had wall eyes. This g1 Draculaura is actually a later rerelease with better eye placement. She's also on an Ever After High Bunny Blanc body to make her short like her animated counterpart.

I'm quite pleased to say that the new Draculaura has a short body. not as short as Bunny of course, but shorter which is very nice. She's also as you probably noticed, signficantly more curvy.

I hate to say it but... I think I actually prefer the new Draculaura's face. Her slightly side glancing eyes and little upturned lip gives her personality and life, something the original Monster High dolls lack as they tend to have such neutral expressions.

I also think the new girl has better painted fangs.

New Draculaura has pink eyes instead of purple and her little beauty mark heart is much smaller, higher on her cheek and black. I think this placement, it makes it look more like a mole.

New Drac's face mold is completely new and features these adorable jugged pointed ears which are very batlike. Original Draculaura had pointed ears as well, but they were far more subtle than these and lay flush to her head. These ones stick out so much they mess up her hair lol.

(random aside, new Drac's earring holes are misplaced so they plug into her FACE. LOL, poor doll. I suppose she doesn't really have much in the way of a molded lobe to use but it's still funky looking)

All the threeboot dolls have their own body type it seems, least, the intial wave do. Draculaura's the shortest of the bunch and has a pear shaped body with broad hips and thick thighs but narrow shoulders. She's proportioned like quite a few modern doll lines. Rainbow High and LOL OMG both use a similar silhouette.

She has a new joint under her bust as well as the typical knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, wrist and neck joint. It's a really interesting joint as it tilts in every direction and also rotates, allowing for quite a lot of dynamic posing.

The bust joint tilts quite far back and also tilts a little forward as well as side to side.

The movement of the bust joint side to side isn't huge, but it's enough to give her a little more life to her poses.

Her elbow and knee joints are pretty much the same in terms of range as the original dolls. She can manage 90 degrees at the knee and a little less than that at the elbow but it's enough that she can touch her own face and sit.

Her legs don't splay very far so she can't do the splits but she sits fine. Unlike the original dolls, this girl's body has strong joints that don't feel like they're going to break at any moment. Don't get me wrong, I love the original monster high dolls, but their bodies are flimsy as fuck. Especially the knee and wrist joints.

this new doll definitely feels more like a doll a kid can actually PLAY with.

Her bust joint also spins 360 and it's HILARIOUS.

I'm not sorry.

Because my signature Draculaura isn't on her original body, Dead Tired Draculaura shall be taking her place for body comparisons.

Poor Dead Tired is a very old, very damaged doll. She's a good example of WHY I don't own a lot of the very early MH dolls anymore. Her knees are cracked and so weak they need elastic bands tucked into the joint in order to hold a pose or even support her, her hip elastic is failing as are the little kips in her hips which means her legs sag at the hip and flop about. One of her elbow joints is broken because the teensy tiny little stopper tore off from normal play and her face is discolouring due to age.

She illustrates all that was a problem with the original Monster High dolls which honestly I think a lot of fans forget about. I feel like g1 monster high is generally viewed through rose tinted glasses when the reality is that they weren't perfect and they haven't aged well at all. A lot of my collection have terrible glue head which has resulted in sticky hair and yellowing faces, the white dolls have begun to yellow, clear plastic has clouded and joints have started to deteriorate. In some cases dolls came new with iffy joints that didn't hold a pose and needed elastic bands and the very early dolls ALL have wide spaced eyes that are staring off in two different directions and no stoppers on their wrist so their hands fall off very easily.

all this is stuff people seem to have forgotten, or they came into monster high late enough that those initial problems had already been long resolved. But Dead Tired Draculaura here is one of the very early dolls and while she has the improved wrist pegs, she still has most of the other issues, many of which Mattel never actually fixed.

New Draculaura has a booty! Heck yeah!

Also her leg seams are on the SIDES of her leg rather than the front and back which makes significantly more sense. It also puts less strain on the seam from the joints themselves. I never understood why Mattel made the original MH legs like this with that seam down the middle of the leg. Every time you bent the knees the seam had strain put on it and eventually it splits at the knee. It also looks ugly because there's this big obvious seam right at the front while side seams are less visible.

I can't get over how spindly the old Monster High bodies are and how much more robust the new doll looks. Draculaura finally ate something!

The new body still has the classic Monster High sway back which rather oddly makes me smile. My spine looks like this due to deformity and much as it's a painful disability, it amuses me to be able to say I "have a spine like a monster high doll".

New Drac also doesn't stand as much on her tiptoes, the new dolls don't have quite such severely high heeled feet. Her bust is larger, in fact, her whole body is just larger in every possible way. Her head is however, slightly smaller than the original. Which is interesting.

The new doll hands aren't as dainty as the original but they're substantially larger and retain that splayed graceful finger look. Note also how thick that wrist peg is and how tiny the original doll one is. That wrist peg was very prone to breakage because of how thin it is. The new peg feels solid and popping the hands off and back on again is a breeze.

The feet are similar, but proportioned differently. They have the same sort of toe, especially that strange little big tie but the new foot (the one on the left) has a shallower rise to it and a thicker heel. It's also wider in the toes so while roughly the same length as the original foot, the heel height and the wider toes mean the dolls cannot share shoes.

A curious decision on Mattel's part there. Backward compatability would have been useful but ho hum.

While we're on the topic of compatibility, no, there's no way the old and new Draculaura's can fit clothing. New Draculaura is almost twice as wide in the hip (and looking damn good for it) as well as having a wider bust and shoulders.

Alas, the new and old Draculauras shall not be able to steal one another's wardrobes.

But i'm not actually too upset by this because it means body diversity and a whole new body shape for Draculaura which I really like (of course, I love me a pear shaped curvy body)

So let's go back to Drac's other stuff before we look at her clothing in detail.

This is all her extra bits and bobs.

we have a cape made of soft shiny synthetic with a foil print. It's completely unhemmed and unlined and has a tendency to roll in on itself. There's a little ruffle at the collar made in the same fabric just turned the other way around and a ribbon to fasten.

it's nothing to write home about. It's a very very basic thing.

There's also a pair of sunglasses which have frames that feel a bit too big.

There's a plastic heart shaped backpack with little bat wings that actually opens up. Well rather, it has a little slit in it but most of these other bits fit into it! so that's fun.

And Count Fabulous who looks PISSED that he's been turned into a chibi kitten thing. I'd be pissed too.

He's just a solid plastic model. He's fine, but his wing position mean he doesn't sit very well on a flat surface, the tips of his wings droop down below his butt. Which furthers my theory that he wasn't originally designed to have them. And as I said earlier, the printing on his eyes is really grainy and pixilated and looks really bad up close.

we also have a return of the SPF 500 sunscreen from Gloom Beach. Funny. This time the bottle has a little loop so it can be held.

Drac also has her ICoffin which features a spiderweb design with fanged lips on the back.

and an awful grainy image on the front. Like DAMN this is bad resolution. You can barely make out any of the icons.

There's a little ring loop on one side that's supposed to slide over the doll's finger but you need to figure out exactly WHICH finger and which hand in order for it to actually work. Still, at least the doll can hold the thing.

I was surprised to learn that the bat pretzel thing actually comes out of the pink tissue paper wrapper. I'm not entirely sure why it has eyes, nor that i'd want to eat something that had big eyes staring at me but there ya go.

this piece is the one I really don't get. What do pretzels have to do with vampires? And why does she even have a pretzel anyway? I mean, this isn't a cafe themed doll, so it's all a bit random to me.

She also has a cherry smoothie (blood orange would have been a better joke but ho hum) and again, I was surprised to learn the lid actually comes off. What a needless detail. I mean it's cool, but it's also completely pointless.

it's also HUGE. It's bigger than her head! That's a lot of smoothie.

Drac can hold all these pieces too, which is nice. I do like that they actually thought about that.

Still, I find it utterly bizarre that the fucking pretzel has better printing/paintwork than Count Fabulous or the Icoffin. Wtf? Priorities Mattel?

I'm still not convinced about the value added of these random foodstuffs. They still feel like random padding to me.

Now onto Draculaura's outfit.

It's nice to see that it's all individual pieces, something Mattel seemed to really get allergic to toward the end of G1 and certainly throughout g2.

Draculaura's outfit consists of a pair of shorts with a fanged heart motif, a necklace, mesh socks, see through blouse, camisole/vest overshirt and a pair of heels.

The shorts are pretty nicely made but the fabric they're constructed of is unpleasant feeling. It's very stiff and plasticky feeling and the stiffness of the material means that the seams of the garment don't quite sit nicely. Everything is all a little too angular. I feel like this material must have been an absolute bitch to sew with, but presumably it's cheap and that's why mattel chose it. *sigh* It feels like the idea was for the shorts to be a sort of light fashion denim or something, but what we actually got was a stiff unyeilding printed synthetic.

The blouse is also a kinda plasticky synthetic but it feels more like I expect something like this to feel. It's a pretty detailed piece with little ruffles along the front and puffed sleeves. The bow itself is made from some sort of very very thin fragile feeling vinyl-like stuff that I honestly feel will tear if i'm not careful. I wish they'd used ribbon or something a little more hard wearing for this.

The outer cami/vest thing is made of that standard satiny synthetic stuff a lot of older monster high clothes were made of. Similar to the skirts first wave Draculaura and Clawdeen wore in fact. It's a bit stiff but has a nice sheen to it and is pretty standard for doll clothing. It's again, a decently sewn little garment with ribbon straps and decorative stitching to make it look like it's constructed out of panels and give a corset-like look to the front. This detailing is actual stitches which is a surprise to me as Mattel LOVES their printed on stitchwork. Glad to see they didn't cheap out on that detail.

Her socks are a sort of mesh material, not quite fishnet as the mesh is too thin. They're over knee socks with a little ruffle at the top. The ruffle on one doesn't quite sit correctly but it's fine.

Her shoes are nothing that exciting. They're pink heels with a paler pink batwing detail. They look nothing like the shoes in her illustration but they work fine with her outfit and unlike a lot of older monster high shoes, they're very easy to get on and off. They were elastic banded to the doll's feet but they don't seem to actually require this, they stay on just fine without.

Her necklace is barely visible under her collar once she's fully dressed so i'm surprised they bothered to include it, but here it is. I suppose it's rather like her original doll who's necklace was also mostly hidden by her collar and bow.

this necklace is a pearly white and I THINK it's supposed to be a cameo but the detail is quite blurred and faint. I believe I can just make out a female face in profile.

Draculaura's earrings are also nothing that exciting but they're perfectly fine earrings. They have really long pegs which make them quite easy to remove and put back in but also mean when they are in they won't fall out unintentionally. This makes a huge change from the original dolls who often had earrings with thin short pegs that snapped when  you tried to get them into the doll's ear. Yet another change that really improves the playability of the doll so thumbs up there Mattel!

They're little hoops with a bat winged heat at the bottom and come in opposite colours to her hair. Black for the pink side, pink for the black side.

She also has a chunky ring that's a big pink diamond shape but it's pretty bloody boring and I couldn't get a decent photo of it.

So, we know old Monster High clothing won't work but what CAN new Draculaura wear?

Rainbow High stuff is a bit hit and miss. The skirts and trousers seem to fit fairly well and the shoes, while a little wide, stay on for the most part. Those styles with ankle straps I couldn't get to go on but then, I struggle to get those damn things onto the actual Rainbow High dolls too.

The tops are baggy but tee styles mostly work.

While any other style it becomes abundantly clear how much wider Rainbow High dolls are in the chest and shoulder.

Her body shape is similar to the LOL OMG dolls with the tiny little upper body and wide hips. Though she is taller and has a less cinched waist.

LOL OMG dress fitted beautifull. (I like this on her)

The jacket worked too. It has 3/4 sleeves on the OMG doll but more like half sleeves on Drac.

OMG shoes don't fit at all, they are too narrow and too high.

This OMG outfit fitted surprisingly well. The shorts sit a little low on her hip but it's not too bad.

And I couldn't resist a snap with her hair twin.

Sadly I couldn't find any shoes that went with this awesome OMG outfit so the purple rainbow high shoes had to do.

But damnit look at this outfit! It's glorious. And it fits her SO WELL.

Maybe it's a little more of an Elissabat look than Draculaura but how cute does she look like this?

Back into her original clothing, i'm not convinced the cape adds anything to her look beyond cluttering it up and the sunglasses are just silly.

The backpack is cute though. I do like that you can fit all her snacks in there (aside from her massive supersized drink of course). I like that it's a backpack, not only does that feel more in keeping for a high school setting but it also means it stays ON. My biggest peeve with doll handbags is that the doll can never hold the bloody things so they just end up getting lost.

I think though, that a fabric backpack would have looked better and sat nicer on the shoulders but oh well.

Final thoughts? I actually adore her.

I love her new body shape and there's a lot of changes Mattel have made to the engineering of things that have massively improved the playability. The earrings, the joints, the wrist pegs and even the little loops on all the accessories show that they were considering how these would actually be played with or displayed. Having the doll able to HOLD her accessories is a huge thing, it's such a rarity to actually see that considered.

G3 don't come with a brush or stands, which is also interesting. I'm seeing fewer and fewer dolls coming with brushes these days. Maybe companies finally realised they were just clutter? The lack of a stand I don't really miss either as I tend to find stands a bit annoying. they take up a lot of space on the shelf. The only reason I use the g1 ones is that the dolls don't stand up without them, but these g3 dolls stand find on their own two feet. I wouldn't call it stable, but they won't immediately fall on their face.

I also can't help but feel like the lack of a stand also makes it clear this is a PLAY toy. The original Monster High dolls really felt more like a collector item, something you were supposed to display not actually mess around with. They were very fragile, their clothing was extremely specific to each character, the first wave dolls had shoes you could barely remove they were so hard and the stand itself screamed "display me! put me on a shelf!"

g3 is stepping away from that more toward an actual toy and that's reflected in how much sturdier the construction is. I appreciate that. Much as I love the original Monster High, the fragility of the dolls has always been an issue and it's always made me terrified of packing them away for storage.

I'm still not convinced about the foods, they still feel utterly random to me and give me Barbie Extra vibes with the random extra plastic shit. I feel like i'd have preferred the budget had gone into proper fabric choices and more detailed shoes and such. Better printing for the icoffin and Count Fabulous too.

I also wish companies would work out a way to make headbands STAY ON A DOLL'S HEAD without having to be stapled to their scalp. Draculaura's headband is plastic tabbed to her head and i'm not snipping those, it'll never stay on if I do. But there has GOT to be a better way to do this. Surely?

That said, I really do think she's a stunningly beautiful doll. I love how characterful her face is and I really like her hair. This new half and half colour and the dramatic fringe I think really works as an update to her original look. I also quite like her outfit even if the fabric choices are a bit iffy. The blouse is such a cool piece and the knee high socks feel very classic Draculaura.

I do wonder if a darker lip like her original doll would be better but at the same time, an awful lot of Draculaura dolls had similar orangey pink lips in G1 and the softer makeup look is probably more appropriate for high school.

Be prepared to comb the grease out of her hair when you debox her. After that her hair is pretty good and behaves itself.

Overall, for $25usd I think she's pretty decent. The original dolls were £15 (about $20usd I think) like 11 years ago, so accounting for inflation and compared to other modern doll lines, 25 feels about right for what you're getting. I think it was a smart choice on Mattel's part there given MGA keeps upping the prices of their releases. The most recent Rainbow High dolls have been getting close to £50 and even within the US they're $40+ and for what? An extra outfit and a stand? They're getting far too expensive so Mattel sticking with a price under 30 feels wise to catch the attention of customers. I mean if you can get two Monster High dolls for the price of one Rainbow High I think a fair few people are gonna pick the MH.

No the threeboot isn't perfect, but neither was the original MH line. It's high time we took off those rose tinted glasses and acknowledged that.

But threeboot Draculaura at least, feels like a worthy successor. I'm very pleased with her. Will the others impress me as much though? I suppose we'll see.

stay tuned for the next deboxing.

For old time's sake, I give threeboot Draculaura a solid 8.5 out of 10 cat bats.
